Should you get an eye examination post covid?

Screen time went up and routine check-ups went down. Here's how to tell whether your eyes need attention now.

Lockdowns pushed most of us into far more screen time than our eyes were built for, and at the same time routine appointments quietly slipped down the priority list. Two years on, we are still seeing the effects of that in the consulting room.

What changed during the pandemic

Prolonged near work (laptops, phones, tablets) encourages the eye to hold a sustained focus that it never gets a break from. In children and young adults, that sustained near focus is associated with faster progression of short-sightedness.

Symptoms worth acting on

  • Headaches that cluster around the end of the working day
  • Blurring when you look up from a screen to something distant
  • Dry, gritty, or watering eyes
  • Difficulty driving at night

What an examination covers

A full sight test is not only about your prescription. We check eye pressure, examine the retina and optic nerve, and look for early signs of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration, all of which are far more treatable when caught early.

If you qualify under the NHS scheme, your test is free. Get in touch and we will find you a slot.
