A contact lens sits directly on the eye, so the prescription is only part of the job. A lens that matches your prescription but not the shape of your eye will feel wrong, move badly, and can damage the surface over time. Fitting is about the eye as much as the sight.
Why a fitting is separate from an eye test
Your glasses prescription is not a contact lens prescription. A lens sits on the eye rather than a centimetre in front of it, which changes the power you need. We also measure the curvature and diameter of the front surface of your eye, and look at your tear film (how much you produce and how quickly it evaporates), because that is usually what decides whether lenses stay comfortable through the day.
If you have dry eyes, that does not necessarily rule out lenses. It changes which ones we would suggest.
Finding the right lens
We start from how you actually intend to wear them. Every day, or only for football on Saturdays? A trial pair goes in, then we look at how the lens sits and moves when you blink, and we check the fit on the eye rather than only asking how it feels. A lens can feel fine and still be too tight.
You take a trial away and wear them in your normal life. Comfort at the end of a long day at a screen is the real test, and no amount of assessment in the chair substitutes for it.
Learning to handle them
If you have not worn lenses before, we will teach you to put them in, take them out, and clean and store them, and we will not send you away until you can do it yourself. Most people find the first few attempts awkward and then wonder what the fuss was about.
The handling matters more than it sounds. Most contact lens problems we see are not caused by the lens. They are caused by sleeping in lenses that were not meant for it, topping up old solution instead of replacing it, or wearing a pair long past its replacement date. Water is the one to avoid: never rinse lenses in it, and take them out before swimming or showering.
Aftercare
Contact lens wearers need checking regularly. We look at the surface of the eye for early signs of trouble, confirm the lens still fits, and update the prescription. Eyes change, and a lens that suited you three years ago may not now.
Booking
We fit lenses at both practices: 204 Well Street, near Hackney Central, and 62a Brooksby's Walk in Homerton. If you are not sure whether lenses would suit you, book an eye examination first and ask. The fitting can follow if you decide to go ahead.
